loved the whole iea of this and if it weren't so fucking hot I'd want to imagine myself as an exhibit too. a little worried about those poor frozen iguanas, though.

What a wry, perceptive vignette of senior living you have penned here, J! We too live in a senior community, only in Ohio. You have really put your finger on the happiness yet sometimes wistfulness of old age. Thanks for this.

I wonder how many of us there are here on Ss who live in what I call communities of common concerns for older folks? Ours has those 3 levels, independent, assisted and final care although we have no common dining room, only a small café in the center of Rancho Los Labradores, 8 miles north of San Miguel de Allende. That's about 3 hours northwest of Mexico City, in the Central Highlands, good weather year round except for May when it's hotter than blue blazes. Rainy season now off and on. Lots of flowers! We have an assisted living facility, Celito Lindo, which also provides a la carte service as needed for those who can and want to stay home. There are numerous social activities and events, no pressure to join, many do not. There is a van that makes 4 trips a day into the city for those who don't or don't want to drive. Also to the grocery store twice a week. Yes, many retired, educated professionals from a variety of fields and ex-pats are from U.S. Canada and a few from other countries, plus some Mexican families as well. Different culture, different values, a welcome change in our case. Hard to leave a large extended family scattered coast to coast north of the border. Anyone interested in a closer look is welcome to visit anytime.
